Fighting Wildlife Trade

The trade in wild-caught parrots poses a significant threat, leading to population declines and local extinctions. Capturing wild parrots not only subjects them to immense stress and harm but also contributes to biodiversity erosion. These practices also fuel illegal wildlife trade networks, which are difficult to regulate and often operate at the expense of animal welfare and conservation efforts. Halting the trade in wild-caught parrots is essential to protect these birds from extinction, preserve global biodiversity and maintain the integrity of ecosystems. The World Parrot Trust, with its partners, is dedicated to the following objectives:

Encouraging Trapping Alternatives

Supporting the development of secure livelihoods for people dependent on trapping. These include ecotourism, bird-watching and micro-industries such as craftwork from local artisans.

Supporting Anti-trade Policies

Lobbying for the development and enforcement of strong corporate and governmental policies against illegal wildlife trade. This includes pushing for stricter regulations and penalties.

Building Community Support

Engaging local communities in understanding the impacts of parrot trafficking. Communities can interrupt trade routes by reporting illegal activities and participating in conservation efforts.

Empowering Law Enforcement

Strengthening the capacity and resources of law enforcement agencies. This allows officials to detect, intercept and dismantle wildlife trafficking networks that target parrots.

Studying the Wild Parrot Trade

Understanding the reasons behind the illegal parrot trade, including market demand and economic incentives. Based on this clarity, concrete actions can be taken to counter these factors.

Rescuing, Rehabilitating & Releasing

Focusing on the rehabilitation of parrots rescued from illegal trade. This involves providing proper veterinary care, physical rehabilitation and reintroduction into the wild if possible.
