Threat Summary:

Not globally threatened. As with formerly conspecific Loriculus philippensis, may be facing trapping pressures. Is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 1.9% within its mapped range over the past 10 years. Therefore, it is tentatively suspected that this may have led to a 1-19% decline in the species’ population over the same time frame.

Range:

Sulu Archipelago, S Philippines.

Habitat:

Is found in tropical moist lowland forest, forest edge, bushy areas, coconut plantations and bamboo stands.

Wild Diet:

Presumably similar to the Philippine Hanging Parrot (Loriculus philippensis); nectar and blossoms such as coconuts, and soft fruit such as Ficus. Also takes seeds, particularly of wild bananas.

Ecology and Behaviour:

Likely similar to Philippine Hanging Parrot: seen in pairs, family groups and small or mixed flocks with other species. Feeds in flowering trees and are acrobatic hanging upside down, all in the upper levels of the canopy.

Clutch and Egg Size:

Likely similar to Philippine Hanging Parrot: 3-4 rounded eggs, 18.5 x 16.5 mm (0.7 x 0.6 in).

Breeding Season:

Presumably similar to the Philippine Hanging Parrot, but information needed.
