Colour Adult:

Both adults in general dark red; purple/blue on upper cheeks to ear coverts; purple/blue band down sides of neck; black primary feathers with wide red speculum; secondary feathers red with black tips; black tertials, washed with blue; red/brown tail. Eye orange/red. Beak medium orange.

Colour Juvenile:

As in adult but plumage in general paler and duller; pale blue only on ear coverts and under eye; scapular feathers brown/grey edged with pale blue; red abdomen with some feathers edged soft blue. Eye orange/brown.

Call:

Calls made in flight loud and screechy.

Threat Summary:

A BirdLife “restricted-range” species. There is little current threat from deforestation but the species is now being trapped, and could also be at risk from fires within its very limited range above 1200 m (4000 ft).

Range:

Found in Seram, South Moluccas, Indonesia.

Habitat:

Found generally above 1200 m (3936 ft), but as low as 800 m (2624 ft). Occurs in primary montane forest and upper montane heathlands up to mountain summit.

Wild Diet:

Includes nectar and flowers; tree heather taken at higher altitudes.

Ecology and Behaviour:

Little known; assumed to be similar to other Eos species. Feeds on flowering trees. Seen in pairs or small groups.
