The World Parrot Trust, in collaboration with Procat Colombia – Proyecto de Conservación de Aguas y Tierras and SELVA Investigación para la Conservación en el Neotrópico, has been working on a conservation project to protect the endangered Santa Marta Parakeet in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada. This initiative began as a pilot project focused on understanding the threats to the parakeet’s habitat and directly engaging local communities in its conservation.
Through initial field research, scientists identified five areas where these parrots thrive. Building on this foundation, recent workshops have been held in nearby communities, where children and adults alike have learned about their local habitat and the importance of bird conservation.
These interactive sessions included birdwatching lessons and group activities, igniting a passion for nature among young and old.
This community-driven approach not only supports research on parakeet nesting preferences and habitat use but also fosters a conservation mindset across generations. Together, with the dedication of local residents, we are paving the way to protect the Santa Marta Parakeet for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey to preserve Colombia’s natural heritage.
