Protecting Colombia’s Santa Marta Parakeet with Community Action

Found only in the forests of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Santa Marta Parakeet is a stunning parrot endemic to this region.

Together with Procat Colombia – Proyecto de Conservación de Aguas y Tierras and SELVA Investigación para la Conservación en el Neotrópico, we’re working to protect this Endangered species through research, the installation and monitoring of 40 artificial nest boxes, and community engagement.

Conservation extends beyond the trees—it thrives when communities are involved. During a recent series of workshops in Minca, adults and children came together to create mind maps and drawings of local biodiversity, learning about the ecological importance of their surroundings.

These workshops are held across the parakeet’s range and are inspiring multiple generations to take pride in their natural heritage and actively participate in its protection.

In remote and challenging terrains like the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the support and involvement of local communities are vital for successful conservation. We’re incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication shown by those who participate in these workshops.

Stay tuned for updates on other aspects of this project, including the monitoring of artificial nest boxes that provide safe nesting spaces for the Santa Marta Parakeet.

Together, we’re helping to boost populations, gather critical data, and secure a brighter future for this remarkable species.
