Hello from Brazil

Andre Saidenberg | Dec 10, 2009

I would like to thank the WPT for inviting me to write this blog. I hope to share with all World Parrot Trust supporters some quick updates on parrot conservation in Brazil.

I’ll try to bring news from the field where recently I’m most involved: Rehabilitation and release of confiscated parrots from the illegal trade. In Brazil theoretically we (parrot lovers) are in a good position because exporting wild caught birds is strictly forbidden, but there’s a rampant illegal trade that supplies the domestic demands for pets as well as for illegal exports going through frontiers with other South American countries.

The entries on this blog will have the characteristic of being both pleasant and gut wrenching, as I’ll try to show you the actual reality of trade and why we should act against it but also the happy moments that more than compensate the sad situations. Asking money for funding projects for animals is never easy, but when we know what’s really happening with these birds and what is being done to help them it totally changes your perspective. Good thing we have an organization like WPT that unite us and gets the job done.

Be sure to check the Fly Free campaign which will support these dedicated NGOs around the world in their struggle against the wild caught trade. Representing Brazil I’ll be able to give you additional info from two partners which will work with WPT: Bichos da Mata Association and SOS Fauna.

More to come…

These are safe, but many more need our help:
